Four Women in American Music History
American music history has grown an incredible amount in the last hundred years. Prior to that time, there were very few styles of music that originated in America. However, with the advent of jazz and related styles, American music culture was born. Blues is one of the early styles of music that is truly American, and there are many American artists who sang or performed in that style. In fact, blues is still popular today, although it has changed over time. Blues is an important and long-term American musical style, which has had many effects on musical culture from the early 1900s through today.Bessie Smith was an early blues singer. She was popular in the 1920s and 30s, and was known as much for her hard-drinking, rough life as much as her music. She sang about what she knew. Bessie was an African American woman who indulged in sex and alcohol, and had a strong temper. She never gave up without a fight, either in her music or her life. Getting into a fight with Bessie wasnââ¬â ¢t something a person wanted to do, either, because she was over six feet tall and weighed about two hundred pounds. Bessie had a history of getting into fist fights with people, male or female. She also took off after her ex-husband with a gun when she found him cheating on her, after beating up his lover. However, Bessie herself was known for sleeping with a number of both men and women (Whitney). Musically, Bessie was not really trained. She could not read music, and relied on other musicians to write her songs down for her. She did write her own lyrics, though. She was a formidable presence on stage, able to sing loudly and strongly because of her size, and her tendency to sing in the range that was easiest for her.In writing her music, Bessie tended to modify existing melodies, and sometimes create new ones, so that they lay well in her ââ¬Å"goodâ⬠range (Whitney). Here is an example of Bessieââ¬â¢s lyrics, which show her feelings about life plainly: ââ¬Å"I ain't no high yella, I'm a deep killer brown. /I ain't gonna marry, ain't gonna settle down. /I'm gonna drink good moonshine and rub these browns down. /See that long lonesome road, Lawd you know it's gonna end,/and I'm a good woman and I can get plenty menâ⬠(Whitney). Bessie was also known as something of a racist. While her fans were both black and white, she was rude to both whites and lighter-skinned blacks. Even at the height of her career, when she had enough money to live as she chose (even as a white person might, in the early 30s), she chose to stay on the streets and to live the life that was familiar to her. Her lyrics here show her thinking on this matter: ââ¬Å"Mister rich man, rich man, open up your heart and mind,/Mister rich man, rich man, open up your heart and mind;/Give the poor man a chance, help stop these hard, hard times./While you're livin' in your mansion you don't know what hard times means, /While you're livin' in your mansion you don't know what hard times m eans; /Poor working man's wife is starving your wife is livin' like a queenâ⬠(Whitney). Ethel Waters is a blues singer who began performing later in Bessieââ¬â¢s career. While Bessie was primarily performing and well known during the 1920s, Ethel became better known in the 1930s (her career did officially begin in 1921, though). Ethel was specifically a different kind of blues singer than Bessie, and in fact was different from her in many ways.Ethel is also of African American decent, but she grew up in the North and was heavily influenced by white performers. When she began performing professionally, Ethel joined a group of blacks who called themselves ââ¬Å"Cakewalk singers,â⬠which was distinctly different from the more traditional blues singers, like Bessie (PBS). Ethelââ¬â¢s acceptance of whites can be traced to what was a very rough beginning for her. She was born when her mother was only 12. Her mother had been raped by a white man, John Waters. Ethel, then, is half-white, and carries her fatherââ¬â¢s surname. She was raised by her maternal grandmother in poverty, and began singing at age 5. Her beginnings are much more similar to Bessieââ¬â¢s, but what she did with herself later differs widely (Myers). Ethel worked with a number of famous jazz performers, including Duke Ellington. In addition to her singing career, Ethel was also an actress, an area of her life that eventually came to the forefront. Her singing style was not nearly as strong as Bessieââ¬â¢s, but she performed very theatrically and managed to capture the audienceââ¬â¢s interest in all of her music. This came in handy, as she continued performing through the 1960s and 70s, working at that time with Billy Graham (PBS). Ultimately, Bessieââ¬â¢s influence on Ethel was very indirect. Both were jazz singers in a time when African Americans were first on the rise in popularity on the stage. Bessieââ¬â¢s grit may have given Ethel opportunities she might not hav e otherwise had. In many other ways, though, the two were very different; attitude, style, and more. Dinah Washington is another important singer in this chain of history. Her birth name was Ruth Jones, and she was born in 1924. She is significantly younger than both Ethel and Bessie, whose careers were near their peaks when she was born. Music was in Dinahââ¬â¢s family from the beginning. Her mother was a church pianist, and taught her to play at a young age. She was accompanying and touring by the time she was 16, and had already won prizes. However, although her initial roots were in the church, Dinah longed to work in secular music, namely jazz (Dahl). At age 19, Dinah got her big break, singing with Lionel Hamptonââ¬â¢s Big Band, then one of the most popular music styles. By 1945, she was recording her own solo work for the Apollo label and Mercury records, and by 1948, she was on her way to major stardom. 1959 was her biggest year, when she sang ââ¬Å"What a Difââ¬â¢re nce a Day Makesâ⬠(Dahl). In her personal life, Dinah was similar to Bessie. She had many husbands, and she drank a lot. In fact, alcohol and drugs eventually killed her at the end of 1963 (Dahl). In addition, she also loved the finer things, including fur, clothes, and cars. Her personality was known as ââ¬Å"feisty,â⬠and she could be snapping one minute and generous the next (Cohodas). At first glance, Christina Aguilera doesnââ¬â¢t look much like the other stars. For one, she isnââ¬â¢t black. For another, she was born after all of the other singers had died. However, it is her roots and influences that she is similar to them. Like Dinah, she is biracial, with a mom who is Irish and a father who is Ecuadorian. Her father was in the military, which meant that Christina traveled a lot as a child (Biggest Stars). Also like the other singers, Christina was interested in singing and performing from the time she was a young girl. Her family was also musical, with her mot her performing on violin and piano professionally. Christina had a brief, two-year stint on The Mickey Mouse Club when she was a child, working with other singers who later became famous, like Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake (Biggest Stars). Christinaââ¬â¢s initial music was definitely pop, with her first number one single titled ââ¬Å"Genie in a Bottle. â⬠The single topped both the U. S. and UK charts in 1999.For awhile longer, Christina continued in the pop genre, recording for the movie Mulan, and singing a new version of ââ¬Å"Lady Marmaladeâ⬠with several other female pop stars (Biggest Stars). Christinaââ¬â¢s work eventually began to seem less significant to her, and she decided to record her 2002 album ââ¬Å"Stripped. â⬠The album was the first that really showed her background and influences. Her comments about this album: ââ¬Å"Coming off of the height of being a part of such a big pop-craze phenomenon, that imagery of that cookie-cutter sweet heart, without it being me, I just had to take it all down and get it away from me.And that is why I actually named the album Stripped, because it is about being emotionally stripped down and pretty bare to open my soul and heart. â⬠This album used many different influences, including soul, R&B, rock, hip-hop and Latin (Biggest Stars). Aguileraââ¬â¢s influences were similar to the earlier stars mentioned. She looked to soul and R&B, both of which are styles typically recorded by African Americans. The blues aspect of R&B, in particular, is interesting to note. Aguilera was following in the footsteps of the other female jazz singers with this style. Also, similar to Dinah Washington, Aguilera sang pop (Dinah did pop in addition to her jazz roots). In general, all four of these women have things in common, and things that are different. Each grew up under similar circumstances, often with mostly maternal influences. Most had some kind of musical background at home. Most grew u p poor, and all had an early talent for music and singing. Most also had a taste for sex, drugs, and some rougher things in life, and had a hard time at one point or another. However, each was unique.Bessie was certainly the biggest and most blunt of the group, while Christina stood of the opposite end as the ââ¬Å"sweetheartâ⬠of pop for awhile. Christina was also different in that she was not of African American decent in any way, although Ethel was also half-white. Some of the singers, namely Dinah, had their start in gospel music, while others went straight for jazz or pop. Overall, it is interesting how strikingly similar the artists are, even though there are also very big differences in their lives and styles.Their stories and backgrounds are surprisingly similar in some respects, but very different in others. These four women are just some of the amazing performers from the rich tapestry that is American music history. Sources Burns, Ken. ââ¬Å"Ethel Waters. â⬠J azz. Accessed on December 4, 2007. European Union Bringing Peace To Europe
The wars bore the modern nations of Europe such as England, France, Germany, Russia, and Italy. Afterwards, they developed their own cultures, which are nationalities, languages, traditions and histories. Due to this characteristic mixed with these various cultures and its nation- centred international politics system of Europe, there rarely was period that ceased from wars in Europe.Furthermore, two world wars in XX century caused the collapse of all Europe's peace and prosperity and Europe, as a result, was no longer the centre f the world. The world power was already moved on the U. S. A and the U. S. S. R. For this reason, people of Europe started to perceive the need of its combination and the European Union was made to restore political peace and economic prosperity of Europe (Nugent, 2006). At this point, it is needed to ask that the European Union has truly fetched peace and prosperity to Europe. It strongly appears to me that the European Union has contributed to political st ability and economic growth to Europe. To demonstrate it, this essay will deal with the following aspects of the historical fforts and intergovernmental agreements which the European Union has made to contributed to political stability and economic growth of Europe in XX century. ââ¬ËMain Body Above all, it is essential to define the mutual relation between political peace and economic prosperity. These two important factors which can decide the rise and fall of each country tend to move together. It means that it is hard to say that there is prosperity without peace or peace without prosperity. For a recent example, economic status of Ireland was almost the lowest in the European Union in the past ut now is definitely regarded as a wealthy country in the European Union. This remarkable economic rise led to synchronize the decrease of al large number of armed conflicts in Northern Ireland, one of the most unstable areas in Northern Europe. In other words, this means that it is cle ar that political stability of a country was highly dependent on economic prosperity (Strong, 2006).Therefore, peace and prosperity are achieved separately rather simultaneously. Equally, it is needed to approach to political peace and economic prosperity of Europe in this way. Peace and prosperity of Europe through the European Union have not gained respectively but coincidently. The first significant movement that brought peace and prosperity to Europe was the treaty of ââ¬ËThe European Coal and Steel Community. After the Second World War, it was widely diffused to aim at ââ¬ËUnited Europe' for its peace and prosperity seeing Europe impoverished by war.Robert Schuman, the French Foreign Minister at that time, suggested epoch-making idea about creation of the consolidated organisation that Jointly supplies and controls strategically important esources such as coal and steel. This is called ââ¬ËThe European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC)' and it became the cornerstone of t he European Union (http:// europa. eu/ecsc/results/index_en. htm). It was obvious that this ECSC treaty brought rise of living standards to overall European society with high economic growth of each country, based on common market, common goal and common organisation. In C provided witn not only co-operation ot the tield ot Coal and S but also political stability of Europe still surrounded with fear of war. It means that it ecame possible to check each other between nations of Europe by Joint distribution and Joint control of Coal and Steel, which is indispensible for war. The second important movement with respect to peace and prosperity of Europe is the Single European Act of 1986 (SEA). In the period of 1971-86, Europe was in heavy economic recession. This stagnation could be regarded as a result that EC members did not successfully cope three serious incidents such as the collapse of the Bretton Woods system, the oil crisis, and the resulting bad economic results' (qiftq, 2005:476 ). Afterwards, in 1985-91, The European Union accomplished prompt growth in the process of economic integration of Europe. However, there was the budgetary crisis, which was an obstruction to progress economic integration of Europe. It was fortunately settled by Mitterrand's consent in 1984 about sharing a great amount of the expenses with respective to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) budget.Consequently, these successive events extended into the creation of the Single European Act of 1986 (ibid). Beyond all, the main issue of the SEA was the accomplishment of internal single market of Europe. The SEA became the opportunity to support institutionally development of the internal single market and deregulation. Through the SEA, the integration process of European community was changed qualitatively. Internal single market is qualitatively different concept from free trade zone between nations or geographical extends of trade. In other words, this internal single market means that each government should be pushed to adopt common standards such as technology, regulations, and norms and so on. It means that all European countries should be responsible for mutual economic benefits. More importantly, needless to say each government, European commission and supranational capitals, this progress was supported by public opinion and even many trade unions such as public consensus (Benink, 1992). It means that the SEA brought economic growth to Europe and, at the same time, drew a conclusion, national consensus which can be developed to political stability. As a consequence, it is seen that peace and prosperity of Europe were not achieved separately. They mostly come together. The third remarkable movement related with peace and prosperity of Europe is the Maastricht treaty of 1992. This treaty brought the most innovative outcome. The Economic and Monetary Union of 2000 was inaugurated. This was definitely the climax of exertion of European Communitys countries that ha d accelerated European monetary integration for around 30 years and also the turning point in history, which proceeded to new stage of European integration (Grieco, 1995).As a result of this treaty, European single currency, the Euro was launched in 1999. By launching the Euro, it was vanished to lose the benefits due to extreme fluctuations in the exchange rate and became clear to know prices of other ountries' merchandise. In addition, there was no longer exchange fee. These advantages of the Euro led to more active international trade between European nations and ultimately brought the economic prosperity of Europe. Moreover, in the Maastricht treaty, the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) was launched. The CFSP included all areas related to Joint security, Joint defense and diplomacy of the European Union. Despite that militarily importance of the United States of America was relatively reduced by extinction ot the USSR's threat, it was still seen that European nations was dependent on the USA. This was mainly because the NATO, which still had important role in European security due to disability regarding dispute resolution of European nations, was practically moved by the USA.In this circumstance, a bond of sympathy that Europe needed its own military strength to cope Jointly increasing international terrorism and geopolitical conflicts began to be naturally formed. Subsequently, the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) was initiated according to the Maastricht treaty (Hurd, 1994). The purposes of the CFSP were to safeguard the common values, fundamental interests and independence of the Union and to develop and consolidate democracy and the rule of law, and the respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. (Nugent, 2006:90). Hence, it can be told that the Maastricht treaty consequently begot peace and prosperity of Europe by pursuit of two objectives such as The Economic and Monetary Union and the Common Foreign and Security Policy. conc lusion To sum up, by examining three significant treaties in this essay, it becomes self- vident that the European Union has constantly pursued peace and prosperity of Europe by advancing the treaties and implementing them and they have finally built the new framework of peace and prosperity of Europe.Additionally, it is also crucial to comprehend that political peace and economic prosperity are concurrently fulfilled. It is true that the European Union has kept a large number of difficulties to stabilise national status for decades. Nevertheless, it is undoubtedly certain that the European Union will be a high-quality model of many areas where peace and prosperity need.

Old El Paso
What: Kurt, the associate marketing manager of Old El Paso, needs to develop a new marketing plan to increase its brand awareness and educate the public about the convenience of preparing Mexican meals. Why: Old El Paso has been the market leader in the Mexican food industry for many years. Now, General Mills wants Old El Paso to increase its sales by 5% while maintaining the same level of profitability. However, Mexican food industry is growing at a relatively slow growth rate of 3% per year, because Mexican food is not always on customers shopping list as there is a strong perception that Mexican food is inconvenient and difficult to prepare. That is why Kurt needs to develop a new marketing plan to raise brand awareness and educate the public in order to achieve the 5% goal. There is a misunderstanding in the communication process between Old El Paso and its customers.Old El Paso has been positioning itself as a ââ¬Å"Family Fun Experienceâ⬠product. Meanwhile, the customers are more concerned about the process of preparing Mexican food, ie. , while many factors, including time needed for preparation and simplicity of preparation contributed to consumer perception of convenience/ease of preparation, ingredient availability was found to be the most significant barrier to making Mexican meals more often. They also need to educate their customers about the benefits of cooking Mexican food. For example, according to their consumer research, 70% of decisions to purchase Mexican meal products are made before consumers ever arrive at the grocery store. Apply the fact to the AIDA model, it is important to raise its brand awareness and get consumers interested in its products in order to increase sales, because most of the purchase decisions are made before the customers see the actual product. With the fact that Old El Paso is the market leader and its brand equity, as soon as the brand awareness and interest is established, the sales will increase. The biggest c ompetitor in the Mexican food industry is private labels. Old Pl Paso has most of the market share in Mexican dinner kits (91. 2%) and Mexican components (70. 4%) category, while ranks number 3 in the Mexican salsa (15. 6%) category. Although both private labels and Old Pl Paso products are in high standards, Old Pl Paso is the only brand that offers a full product line in the Mexican food industry and is distributed in 98% of all grocery stores (with an average of 7. Old Pl Paso items on shelf). This means that Old Pl Paso is reachable to most of consumers while certain private labelââ¬â¢s products are only available in certain grocery chains. How: Targeted results: Increase brand awareness while convince the public that it is easy to prepare Mexican food. 1) General public: Using kiosks to demonstrate the process of how to cook a Mexican meal with in-store ingredients. Reason: 80% of the population still do majority of their shopping at grocery stores.By using in-store ingredie nts, the general public will know that everything they need for cooking a Mexican meal is in the store, so it is easy to prepare a Mexican meal. 2) Regular Mexican food shoppers: Place Old Pl Paso products at cashier counters. Reason: Placing products at the check-out counters to remain regular Mexican food shoppers that they could use Mexican food as an option for tonightââ¬â¢s dinner. Although this tactic implies impulsive shopping behaviour of some consumers, it also constantly remains consumers that Mexican food is available in the market.

Pharmacology - Assignment Example Activated tyrosine kinase in turn activates the signalling pathways such as protein kinase C pathway, Scaffolding proteins, Ras/Raf mitogen ââ¬â activated protein kinase pathway, and phosphoinositol 3ââ¬â¢ ââ¬â kinase/Akt pathway (Arora and Scholar, 2005). These activated pathways alter the DNA synthesis along with cell growth, differentiation, and others. Almost all the TKI have side effects. The common side effects of TKI are anaemia, neutropenia, oedema, thrombopenia, hypothyroidism, diarrhoea, and vomiting (Hartmann et al., 2009). At the same time, TKI molecules are now approved for clinical trials in human. TKI application for cancer treatment in dogs and cats was approved earlier, with TKI drugs such as Palladia (Toceranid), Gleevec (imatinid) and Kinavet (mastinib) (London, 2009). Before conducting the safety pharmacology tests, the regulatory guidelines for testing the undesirable pharmacodynamics effects on physiological functions should be focused. This is because, in the early phase pharmacology studies, all risk factors can be found out and eliminated. TKI are found to have adverse cardiovascular effects. So, when testing TKI in dogs and cats, telemetry has to be used for the continuous monitoring of systemic arterial pressure and chronotropic effects. The pharmacodynamic effects of TKI can be determined in the organs using tumor specimens. Surrogate marker can be used as an alternative approach. These tissues act as human models and TKI effect on these tissues reveals the potential effects of TKI molecules. (Kufe et al., 2003). These pharmacological screening methods enable the scientists to find out the adverse effects of TKI, and facilitate them to come up with ways on how the programme should be modified for human safety. The effect of the drug in or gan function, and importantly the relevance of its potential in humans

Globalization and Ethnicity in the United Kingdom Essay
Globalization and Ethnicity in the United Kingdom - Essay Example The effect of globalization-led migration is the growing diversity of any given state and the heightened pressure of supporting and fairly representing the interest of a stateââ¬â¢s citizen living abroad. On the other side, globalization has resulted in some of the societies that exist as enclaves within the boundaries of a given state to champion for their independence, secession, and right to govern themselves. Prior to the World Wars, the United Kingdom was the most dominant nation on earth and the superpower of the nineteenth century. The UK had engaged in colonial conquest in various parts of the globe. Having been the major power in the nineteenth century, Britain had occupied many parts of the world spreading their language and culture. In contemporary world setting, immigration to the United Kingdom has been tremendous with many people especially from third world countries and former colonies making the highest numbers of immigrants. Many third world countries have been af fected by political turmoil at one time in their history, resulting in political asylum and influx of refugees into the UK (Beck 2000). à Former British colonies like India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and South Africa among many others form the largest numbers of refugees and political asylum individuals living in the UK. Between 1991 and 2001, about half of the population increase in the UK was a result of the presence of immigrants born outside the UK. The UK thus has a very high number of immigrants who constitute the general population (Delanty 2008). Most of these people are not the UK born and some have spent the most part of their childhood in other countries and some even adulthood. Culture is dynamic, and culture in most cases dictates individualsââ¬â¢ behavior and ways of life.

The Poor and Vulnerable in the Society Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
The Poor and Vulnerable in the Society - Essay Example The above examples illustrate how much God cares for the poor. Christians have the responsibility to emulate these examples because they represent God on earth. Justice in the society is measured by how the poor and vulnerable are treated. If they are sidelined or treated as second citizens, it is because such a society lacks morals and the ethical responsibility needed for fairness to reign. However, when the poor are given a voice, justice flows. Therefore, Christians should be in the forefront defending the rights of the disadvantaged in society, as this is what is meant by true religion. People blame the poor and vulnerable for their states. These societies equate wealth with hard work. The affluent are praised for their possession. They are considered as superiors because of the material gains they have. On the other hand, the poor are treated as inferior because they do not have wealth acquisitions (Sellers 124-127). They are regarded as worthless or given difficult tasks to perform because they do not have any other option. However, with such treatment, the rich secure their future while worsening matters for the poor (Ark 55-59). It becomes difficult for the poor to break the cycle of poverty because they are overloaded with work for little pay. Their condition is prolonged not because they are lazy, but because they are not given equal opportunities as their fellow wealthy counterparts. They have to struggle to survive yet the rich glide through life. However, when chances are provided equally for all, the poor get the opportunity to improve their circumstances. The elite has the advantage to better education. Knowledge puts them ahead in life. It provides them the probability of securing a well-paying job. It puts them ahead in the corporate world. In third world countries, a good education is a huge privilege for many. Illiteracy has been a huge cause of poverty. However, there are countries that have abolishedà school fees in public schools. In such institutions, the class turns up is high.Ã

Advanced Research Methods Dissertation Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Advanced Research Methods - Dissertation Example Companies are expanding operations in other nations and the increasing incidence of mergers, acquisitions and joint ventures have increased the challenges before organizations in terms of managing a diversified and cross cultural work force. For example, an American company shifting its manufacturing and marketing facilities in China will have to integrate organizational HR practices in keeping with the lifestyle and culture of the local population. Such situations can result in cross cultural conflicts that can adversely impact organizational culture and productivity. It is very difficult for American executives to adapt to Chinese culture and systems of working. Such circumstances create responsibility for the HR department to ensure that cross cultural relationships within the organization are cordial and positive so that the company functions smoothly. This proposal is about a quantitative research that will be carried out in the area of human resource management in an organizati on that is shifting its manufacturing facilities from the US to China in order to benefit from the accruing economies of scale, low costs of production and cheap availability of raw material. The proposal will outline the research strategy on how to deal effectively with the emerging issues of training a culturally diversified workforce. Introduction The study will address some major issues in terms of the extent to which a cross cultural training strategy can work positively in improving the companyââ¬â¢s performance in China. In order to achieve this objective, exhaustive research will have to be carried out on how expatriates and local employees have to be dealt with. Initially the company will have to ask Americans or nationals from other countries to work in China because key positions in the company cannot be performed by Chinese nationals. The research will ascertain the merits and demerits if cross-cultural training modules and also ascertain the approaches that will work best in the given environment. Another objective will be to develop theories of efficient cross-cultural modules for global human resource personnel. HRM is widely acknowledged as a management resource that imbibes the maximum possible management actions and decisions that impact relationships amongst the organization and workers (Beer et al, 1986). It is the process that coordinates the organizationââ¬â¢s human resources in meeting organizational objectives. Therefore, the job of HR professionals becomes quite complicated because all aspects of the firm and workers have to be encompassed. It is believed that the most significant asset of the organization is its people that assist in achieving its goals, and this comprises the core of the HRM philosophy. Human resources are the most important asset and are the major force that drives human resource management in any organization. Human resource personnel have to take care of areas such as professional development, compensation, benefits, performance evaluation, recruitment, health and safety, job design, job analysis, labor relations and management of a diverse work force (Lipiec, 2002). According to Schermerhorn (2002), there is global inter-dependence in the global economy in terms of resources and markets whereby every business thrives because of competition. Internationalization has led businesses to act and think globally in order to succeed in a competitive environment. Some theorists have viewed globalization as providing massive growth potential for both developed and developing

Business decision making - Essay Example The study will also put into consideration the sales value of the organization and factors affecting sales by use of graphs. In addition, measure of performance of the organization will be of much concern and various methods will be used. Some of those methods include; mean mode, median, standard deviation, Variance, correlation coefficient, rage and Net present value methods. 1.1) Primary data usually gives firsthand information about the target market hen coming up with a plan for the following should be considered; research method, contact methods, sampling plan and research techniques and instruments. These methods of collecting data differ from those of secondary methods. In primary research a clear plan of contacting people who will participate will be decided on. This may include the use of phone interviews online surveys and other mediums to find out customer preferences from prospect customers. The sampling plan will involve taking into consideration the size of the sample to be used. The research instruments will involve the use of questionnaires (Boswell, Boswell, and Cannon, 2014) The use of secondary data will involve using data that has been already documented these data may be useful because a comparison of similar organization in the industry may be used in forecasting sales (Kothari, 2005) Collecting primary data has advantages over secondary data because they are fresh, precise and are related to the issue of concern. Secondary data may be outdated thus may give wrong projections, may contain errors, may not be easily accessible and might be of low quality (Mooi, and Sarstedt, 2011). We are going to collect primary data as well as secondary data as indicated below. 1.2) The sampling frame refers to the target group which researchers can use to make selections. It contains a comprehensive and updated list of the members of the population involved in the research. There are various methods, which can be used for

Cloning of Animals Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Cloning of Animals - Assignment Example This somatic cell is from the genetic donor. This is a process where ââ¬Å"the nucleus of a somatic cell is transferred to the cytoplasm of an enucleated eggâ⬠or an egg whose nucleus is removed in order to remove the femaleââ¬â¢s DNA. This female is the egg donor. These bad results of cloning like the oversized heads and the twisted limbs are due to the epigenetics problem. This is the ââ¬Å"control of gene expression (specifically transcription), that is not dependent on DNA base sequence.â⬠This means that SCNT, or somatic cell nuclear transfer, produces the epigenetic error. Why? (READ THE CAUSES): The same technology is used, of course. Those animals that are born alive from the SCNT process are processed as food. So far, cows, pigs and sheep are used as food. But cloned animals for food are not that practical. Why ? Because there are 3 basic problems with this: Second, (READ), Well, this is something we cannot change. Muslims can never eat pork and Hindus will never eat beef, whether cloned or natural. And Fundamental Christians are always against cloning, and they are assumed not to like cloned food. Secon Hand Smoking Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Secon Hand Smoking - Research Paper Example 1). Due to the dangers of being exposed to secondhand smoke, one agrues that secondhand smoke should be banned in all public places through ordinances and stricter governmental policies. Statistics Some of the most alarming information gathered on SHS, as revealed by the World Health Organization (WHO) are as follows: that (1) ââ¬Å"SHS causes 600 000 premature deaths per year. There are more than 4000 chemicals in tobacco smoke, of which at least 250 are known to be harmful and more than 50 are known to cause cancerâ⬠(WHO: Fact 3, n.d., p. 1); (2) ââ¬Å"more than 94% of people are unprotected by smoke-free laws. However, in 2008 the number of people protected from second-hand smoke by such laws increased by 74% to 362 million from 208 million in 2007. Of the 100 most populous cities, 22 are smoke-freeâ⬠(WHO: Fact 9, n.d., p. 1). These figures prove that government health agencies have acknowledged the detrimental effects to health of SHS and are designing and implement ing various monitoring measures to validate, confirm, and address the dilemma. The segment of the population who were identified to be most at risk are children who were noted to eventually develop different health dilemmas, ranging from pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, and even ear infections (CDC, 2012). For adults who were persistently exposed to SHS, studies have revealed preponderance to lung cancer and heart ailments (CDC, 2012). The study published by the CDC, entitled ââ¬Å"Vital Signs: Nonsmokers' Exposure to Secondhand Smoke --- United States, 1999ââ¬â2008â⬠confirmed the followign statistics related to SHS, to wit: ââ¬Å"An estimated 88 million nonsmokers in the United States were exposed to secondhand smoke in 2007ââ¬â2008. Children are at particular risk for exposure to secondhand smoke: 53.6% of young children (aged 3ââ¬â11 years) were exposed to secondhand smoke in 2007ââ¬â2008. While only 5.4% of adult nonsmokers in the United States lived with s omeone who smoked inside their home, 18.2% of children (aged 3ââ¬â11 years) lived with someone who smoked inside their home in 2007ââ¬â2008â⬠(CDC, 2010, p. 1). These varied statistical information affirm that SHS is clearly linked to illnesses, both for children and adults, alike. Likewise, since the figures and trends continue to alarm health authorities, there seems to be a crucial need to re-assess current health ordinances to at least minimize the risks of contracting the identified illnesses. Effects of SHS The effects of SHS on health of children and adults, alike, have been confirmed from various studies for being exposed in SHS (CDC, 2012). The most pronounced health dilemma of SHS is the increased risks to contract various forms of cancer, such as lung cancer, and ââ¬Å"childhood leukemia and cancers of the larynx (voice box), pharynx (throat), brain, bladder, rectum, stomach, and breastâ⬠(ACS: Why is SHS a problem, 2013, par. 3), making SHS a health co ncern of government health agencies. The exacerbating factor is that since children and adults who were exposed to SHS could not control the source of the problem, preventing and minimizing its debiliating impact proved to be extremely challenging. More pronounced focus and strategical efforts exerted by government health agencies to address SHS means more time, money and resources being expended
Slave Revolts Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Slave Revolts - Assignment Example Set in 1839, Amistad reveals the story of a group of recently captured West African slaves aboard the ship of La Amistad from the coast of Cuba, their unexpected voyage to the United States and their plight for freedom under legal complexities. Their leader Cinque recounts that they were illegally taken to a slave fort in the British territory of Sierra Leone in Africa. They were enslaved and eventually transported and sold to Cuban slave markets. During the transatlantic journey, the slaves suffered from torture, random execution and even rape. Because of the horrible conditions that these men endured, the thirst for freedom conquered their fears that led to a revolt aboard La Amistad. The slaves killed their captors in cold blood and directed the remaining crew to bring them back in their home country. However, the ship crew brought them in the United States instead, and the series of legal battle against slavery followed that eventually reached the Supreme Court. The issue of slavery in society up stretched the immoral and callous truth of treating a fellow human being as an object of property and as a marginal individual. In the course of the Amistad uprising, whites bought black African slaves, or anyone with African descent, for additional labor either for their household or in agricultural plantations. Very little rights were given to slaves, while their fate, reproduction and survival belong solely to their owners. It was an atrocious normal way of life as supported by law and politics during that era. Nonetheless, the centuries-worth of suppression gradually developed into an eruption of violence through rebellion and mass disobedience, which later pushed to the American Civil War (Mann, 2008). In addition to the Amistad case, the U.S. Supreme Court backed up the previous ruling of the lower court to give the

Steps To Plan An Effective Business Presentation English Language Essay
Steps To Plan An Effective Business Presentation English Language Essay Business presentation is any presentation of factual information and its interpretation using the spoken word. By this definition, business presentations include much of the information and analyses exchanged daily in the conduct of business. Business presentations may be primarily informative, offering data without recommendations; or may be analytical, offering investigation and recommendations for solving a problem. No matter what kind of presentation it is, the presenter is responsible for showing relationships between his research findings and management objectives. Whenever a person plans, prepares, and creates a message to deliver to others, he makes a presentation. During these presentations, speakers may often need to convince the listeners that their findings are pertinent, valid, reliable, and useful to the organization and to the people they serve. Types of business presentations Informative- In this type of presentation the main objective is to educate the audience for example some new plan, products, services etc. Persuasive- These presentations are given to convince the people for a common viewpoint. These presentations are common to the various levels in the organizations. Motivational speeches or presentations in an organizations are also the example of this type. Group- These are the presentations given by the groups or teams to disclose their findings and results. Special occasion speech- This type of speech is given in honour or welcoming some special group or delegates or introducing another person to the audience. Steps To Plan an Effective Business Presentation Set Objectives What do you want the end result of your presentation to be? Do you want to convince people to buy something? Do you want to instruct them? The objective of your presentation will determine most of your substance; the simple act of writing down your objectives will make it that much easier to organize what youre going to say and when youre going to say it. Keep Audience in mind The next step is to keep in mind that to which type of persons you are to give presentation. Presenter must prepare its presentation which is understandable by the audience. For example if a sales person is selling a product to a labor class then he must use words as simple as can be used and avoid technical words if possible and also emphasize on demos and slides in layman language. Note Key Points The next step is to outline the main points of the presentation that you are going to present . This will be helpful when sometimes we get blank in between of the presentation. These key points are important because all the presentation revolve around the main idea of the presentation. Sequence Your Presentation Once you have an outline of all of the topics that you want to cover in your presentation then you need to determine the sequence of your presentation. A good way to do that is to use a simple flowchart which lays out the order of the ideas that youre going to present. Some people, usually hardcore PowerPoint users, prefer to use real storyboards where they produce mock-ups of each stage of the presentation. Determine What Visuals You Will Need The final step to preparing a presentation is to figure out what sort of visual aids youre going to need. You probably wont need a complicated visual for every single point of your presentation, but when it comes down to explaining something complicated, like how a business process works, then youre going to want to support yourself with a good visual. Importance of Business Presentation Planning It helps to explain the idea you want to convey in an effective manner. If presentation is good then it also acts as a tool of motivation. Means to connect to the stakeholders i.e. to provide information about new products or services. Means to share your business ideas. Steve Jobs Steve jobs is a great visionary and a great businessman or we can say a good dreamer. He is the co-founder of the well known brand APPLE INC. USA. He has developed products as Apple iphone, ipad, ipod, iMac etc. Another attribute for which Steve jobs was well known is his presentation skills, he is a great presenter and it was said that A Jobs presentation is like a carefully crafted, well-rehearsed performance that tells a story and shares a vision. He very much focus on selling dream not the product or services. à Steve Jobs Presentation Secrets 1. The Tagline. Steve Jobs positions every product with a Tag line that explains all the unique thing of the product. For example, Jobs described the Mac Book Air as the worlds thinnest notebook. This phrase appeared on his apple websites, presentations, and press releases of apple at the same time. 2. A villain. In every classic story, the hero fights the villain. In 1984, the villain, according to Apple, was IBM (IBM). Before Jobs introduced the famous 1984 television ad to the Apple sales team for the first time, he told a story of how IBM was bent on dominating the computer industry. 3. A simple slide. Apple products are easy to use because of the elimination of clutter. The same approach applies to the slides in a Steve Jobs presentation. Steve jobs believe in making simple slides , he never used bullets or lots of words in his presentation slides instead he use more pictures and images that are self explanatory. For example when he launched apple macbook air he displays it in an envelope. 4. A demo. Neuroscientists have discovered that the brain gets bored easily. Steve Jobs doesnt give you time to lose interest. Ten minutes into a presentation hes often demonstrating a new product or feature and having fun doing it. When he introduced the iPhone at Macworld 2007, Jobs demonstrated how Google Maps (GOOG) worked on the device. He pulled up a list of Starbucks (SBUX) stores in the local area and said, Lets call one. When someone answered, Jobs said: Id like to order 4,000 lattes to go, please. No, just kidding. 5. An Emotional moment. Every Steve Jobs presentation has one moment that neuroscientists call an emotionally charged event. The emotionally charged event is the equivalent of a mental post-it note that tells the brain, Remember this! For example, at Macworld 2007, Jobs could have opened the presentation by telling the audience that Apple was unveiling a new mobile phone that also played music, games, and video. Instead he built up the drama. Today, we are introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications deviceà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦an iPod, a phone, an Internet communicatorà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦an iPod, a phone, is you getting it? These are not three devices. This is one device! The audience erupted in cheers because it was so unexpected, and very entertaining. Humour and presentations In the business presentations humour is necessary but it must be in good taste. An original joke is better which the audience has never heard before. The joke must be related to the subject of the speech. If we take example of Steve jobs he uses humour in his presentations so that the audience may not get bored. This was his one of the skills in presentations thats why he was very popular in giving good or we can say awesome presentations. The 10 Presentation Tips of Steve Jobs Plan presentations with pen and paper. Storyboard the presentation first. Jobs initially prepares by brainstorming and white boarding ideas. Single sentence description for every service/idea. As an example, for the introduction of the Mac Book Air computer, Jobs said that it is simply, The worlds thinnest notebook. Create a villain that allows the audience to rally around the hero-you and your product/service. A villain doesnt necessarily have to be a direct competitor. It can be a problem in need of a solution. Focus on benefits. Your audience only cares about how your product or service enhances their lives. Make that connection. Stick to the rule of three. Almost every Jobs presentation is divided into three major parts. You might have 20 points to make in your presentation, but your audience will only remember three or four. Sell dreams, not your products or services. Jobs doesnt sell computers, he sells the promise of a better world. When he introduced the iPod, he said, In our own small way were going to make the world a better place. Create visual slides. Jobs dont use bullet points. Instead, he relies on photographs and images. When he unveiled the Mac Book Air, he showed an image of the computer fitting inside a manila inter-office envelope. Make numbers meaningful. Jobs always put large numbers into a context to make them relevant to his audience. The bigger the number, the more important to find an analogy or comparison that adds clarity. Use plain English. Steve jobs always uses simple English phrases in his presentations and rarely use jargon so it not create any confusion in the mind of audience. Practice, practice, practice. Jobs used to spend hours rehearsing the presentation and do it like a theatre performance artist. Conclusion We must learn from Steve jobs style of presentation. His presentations are not only of informative style but there is a complete mix of presentation styles such as motivational, humor etc. Generally for example most of people get bored in the presentations but it is the Steve job`s presentations that are well designed, planned, well structured sand also well rehearsed. One must fully take care when developing a business presentation because it is the presentation which tells about your dream, vision, product or services to the stakeholders and it is necessary to fully satisfy them to succeed in business. Key points to remember regarding presentations Be clear about your objectives Always keep in mind your audience Less is more. Research. Be concrete. Use Visuals.

The Need Of Money To Be An Entrepreneur Business Essay
The Need Of Money To Be An Entrepreneur Business Essay Nobody can reject that money is really important in life , it helps us do whatever we like and a statement is given to discuss that all you need is money to be an entrepreneur. I do not totally agree with this statement because of some reasons and this essay will describe, indicate different elements and prove that money is not all for its success. With evidence of reading and researching I think that being an entrepreneur need more things such as: the passion, ability and experience. The passion it will help you a strong motivation to implement your ambition. Of course, an entrepreneur has to have good ability with many fields; they will run and manage their business right direction which they desire. Business always faces with many risks, suffers from pressures around and a leaders need get over them quickly. Moreover they need have innovative strategies and motivations for products services to compete with other companies. And the other important thing is experience, it will help a leader an overview about problems and troubles which brings many disadvantages for business are to assist you find suitable solutions .When experience has a lots , you can treat and control sudden situations more exactly. Being an entrepreneur need many different elements to support and money is not all. As Harold, G (n.d) said that: In the business world, everyone is paid in two coins: cash and experience. Take the experience first; the cash will come later. We can see that money plays an important role but it doesnt decide everything and entrepreneur should have and combine all elements together, they will get the better effects to maintain and develop their business. All you need is money to be an entrepreneur. The passion which is defined as the energy that can bring you more into what you do.I totally agree that the passion is the first element which helps us strong motivations to get the desire. You can get your personal satisfaction, financial purpose, stable attitude and enjoyment with what you want to put into your business. So if you do not have any passion with jobs, you will be difficult to succeed in running your business. You have to think of yourself as an entrepreneur so you will have a deep responsibility with your choices. You learn how to organize and maintain business through researching related resources and have right directions as real experts. As we know Oprah W (n.d) is one of the most famous entrepreneurs through her media and publishing interests. She is called as queen of media over the world. Her passion quotes was that: Passion is energy. Feel the power that comes from focusing on what excites you or Ignoring your passion is like dying a slow deathà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦P assion whispers to you through your feelings, beckoning you toward your highest good. Pay attention to what makes you feel energized, connected, stimulated- what gives you your juice. Do what you love, give it back in the form of service, and you will do more than succeed. You will triumph or Donald T (n.d) is one of millionaires with quote without passion you dont have energy, without energy you have nothing or Nothing is as important as passion. No matter what you want to do with your life, be passionate of Jon Bon Jovi (n.d) is a famous musician, song writer. Through many famous quotes of successful entrepreneurs agree that the passion is really important to help you follow the dreams and ambitions so passion is one elements to contribute and build an entrepreneur. Moreover to be an entrepreneur need ability which is the second element, it is expressed with many aspects such as: skills, knowledge etc. Asà Lou H (n.d) said that: ability is what youre capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it or Donald K (n.d) has quote that A man of ability and the desire to accomplish something can do anything. We can see the second element which is really important is ability. Firstly if you have ability, you will know how to run business right direction based on your skills. You have to create the great ideas and evaluate them how to impact to your business. Your business plans must be shown your goals, strategies; action steps and answers some questions such as: who is your customer? How is your business plans implemented? What are my objectives, strategies, action steps to get your goals? Can you think of ways to solve problems? How much money can yours earn? etcà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦( Tamara, M n.d) so you must be a creative mind if you want to become an entrepreneurs. Always think of costs, manufacture time, output and quality of products or services which bring benefits for yours. You need to take time, calculation, describe detail about your products or services which can satisfy customers. You have to analyze about market, demand and supply in order to you can give innovative strategy to compete with other competitors. à With your ideas investors will be interested in investment their money and bring many opportunities to develop yours. With problems and troubles, you are not able to forecast consequences which can happen to your business so an entrepreneur need know how to face with taking risks and suffering from pressures around. You always have to remember a sentence: Failure is the mother of success to take experiences and find how to get over them. Many businesses had serious problems but they did not know how to maintain theirs and their businesses were closed. So you should build business plans effectively and reduce risks. Being a success entrepreneur you need be brave to face with pros, research more to find the good solutions. Furthermore an entrepreneur is an independent person to make decisions on their own. You do not feel to be afraid of rejection from other colleagues. And a leader need have ability to persuade employees, partners, and customersà in order to support for your business plans whether challenges will happen to you. Besides, an entrepreneur needs identify opportunities for your business with steps such as: spotting, assessing, selecting and executing upon opportunities. You must be able to spot an unmet need which is potential for business. After sporting unmet need, you need analyze them to assess and determine marginal success of finance and human resources. Next step is selecting opportunities which play an important role to gain success and the last step is executing Upon Opportunities which step is combined among creativity, passion, persistence, focus, responsibility, intelligence, planning and energy. An entrepreneur has to know how to take and select opportunities for them to maintain and develop business day by day (anonymous, n.d).Moreover a leader should build a network system for business because nowadays technology plays a major role in the management and unlimited information. It helps business update and deal with any problems more quickly, exactly as well as save time for everyon e in business. Another advantage of technology is sure that it allows you to monitor progresses and helps limited risks (Tamara ,M n.d ). As we know Steve job is one of the fathers of the personal computing era and the founder of Apple. He has quote in 1996 that: These technologies can make life easier, can let us touch people we might not otherwise. You may have a child with a birth defect and be able to get in touch with other parents and support groups, get medical information, the latest experimental drugs. These things can profoundly influence life. Im not downplaying that or Bill ,G (n.d) said that: information technology and business are becoming inextricably interwoven. I dont think anybody can talk meaningfully about one without the talking about the other. Two of famous entrepreneurs emphasize how technology is important in business as well as life nowadays. The third element is experience which is known as the nature of events someone or something has undergone with any jobs will bring for you different skills such as : sales, marketing or managementYou have to face with people , difficult situations which you need to think of giving the best ways to support for your business. However if you do not have much experience in business , the limited information about market, sales, organization, management etc you will be waste of time, give bad solutions. On contrast if you have experience, you will run yours right direction, understand problems and deal with problems more quickly. Of course an entrepreneur really need much experience in order to get to speak to employees and answer all given questions. Doing work with experience you will show your ability, passion, interest, confidence and it will give you a good understanding of your strengths and weakness. As Tom K (n.d) quote that: there are no failures- Just experiences and your reacti ons to them or Donal T (n.d) said that: Experience taught me a few things. One is to listen to your gut, no matter how good something sounds on paper. The second is that youre generally better off sticking with what you know. And the third is that sometimes your best investments are the ones you dont make. Everyone needs experience with each field, it helps us get over difficulty easier and limit risks. Moreover an entrepreneur with much experience will be useful in selecting and recruiting employees in order to provide good human resources for yours through some steps such as: Planning includes: structure, focus, identity, prepare; Implementation includes: contact, motivate, evaluate and the last step is closure which includes : select, offer , candidate joining (anonymous, n.d). With each step your business will recruit many suitable employees for each necessary position in company. Furthermore, if an entrepreneur has much experience, he will build good relationship with partners or customers easier. As Bill, G (n.d) said that: Our success has really been based on partnerships from the very beginning relationship in business is really important for each company and just having experience can assist you to handle good partners. The partners will keep your business going and cooperate together in order to develop, bring benefits and compete with other companies. Aà goodà businessà partnership has clarified responsibilities, expectations and how to cooperate effectively such as: investment, competition and manufacture products or services. Critical use. Entrepreneur is known as a person who runs a company or business. They finance or make decision which belongs to operation of business. All important problems such as: organization, arrangement, open new projects of business need be allowed by an entrepreneur and they need to find solutions when facing with the risks and disadvantages. An entrepreneur has to predict opportunities, make plans and manage the business in order to bring benefits and gain profits for theirs. We can see under framework of the Entrepreneurial Personality which supports more elements to be an entrepreneur. They include: internal locus of control, high need for achievement, moderate risk taking propensity. An entrepreneur must have ability to run business, reduce risks and disadvantages (both Jekyll, I 2005).You often thinks of ideas, innovative strategies and how to implement them to get achievement for company in future. http://www.westga.edu/~distance/ojdla/summer82/hild1.gif Figure 1: Framework of the Entrepreneurial Personality (Source: signed: DLA 2005 proceedings, Jekyll Island, Georgia, June 5-8, 2005). And One clear example about a successful entrepreneur is Mark Zuckerberg who set up networking site that has widened over the world: Facebook as well as Ceo and president of the business, he is one the youngest billionaires in the world. Mark Zuckerberg was born in a normal family but he showed his intelligence from an early age and was interested in computer programs. From his childhood, he really inspired in computer and by following his desire he got achievement noticeably. His father said that Mark Zuckerbergpassion helped him be a successful entrepreneur so the passion plays an important role to get the desires for anyone. As well as Mark Zuckerberg Oprah Wfrey is well-known as the queen of media over the world however she was born in a poor family stayed with her grandmother in Mississippi. She undergoned so many diff iculties in her childhood but with her passion and ability she established her first talk show which was called people are talking in 1976 as well as worked as anchor and news reporter. Side Effects of Antidepressants Essay -- Medical Depression Psychology
Side Effects of Antidepressants Side effects have played a significant role in the development of SSRIââ¬â¢s. The first drug, iproniazid, was developed to fight tuberculosis in the early 1950's, and had a noticeable side effect on mood elevation. Soon it was known as a "happy drug". This drug immediately gained attention from physicians and depression researchers. At that time the only drug on the market for depression was opium, which was a highly addictive substance (Turkington 49-50). Ten years of specific drug research to identify different models of nerve transmissions and tailoring chemicals to affect these processes resulted in the development of Prozac (Turkington,61). "Eli Lilly and Co.'s (Prozac's manufacturer) official product information acknowledges that tremors alone occur in 10% of patients on Prozac. Any side effect occurring in 1% or more of patients is acknowledged as "frequent" by the pharmaceutical industry (Glenmullen). Some of these side effects that have been reported are feelings of jitteriness, sleep problems "tardive dyskinesia," and "sexual dysfunction". Other side effects from Prozac include weight gain, tiredness, increased appetite, feeling weak, sore throat, and trouble with concentration (Smith). Side effects of antidepressants fall in three different categories: sedation; dry mouth, blurry vision, constipation, urinary problems, increased heart rate, and memory problems; and dizziness on standing up, orthostatic hypotension. Those that interfere with dopamine, such as Effexor and Asendin, may produce movement disorders and endocrine system changes. Blocking serotonin may create stomach problems, insomnia, and anxiety. Essay on Toni Morrisons Beloved - Freedom and Independence
Freedom and Independence in Belovedà à à Toni Morrisonââ¬â¢s important novel Beloved is a forceful picture of the black American experience.à By exploring the impact slavery had on the community, Beloved evolves around issues of race, gender, and the supernatural.à By revealing the story of slavery and its components, Morrison declares the importance of independence as best depicted by Sixo.à The combination of an individual amongst a community sets forth the central theme of moving from slavery to freedom and reconnecting with family and community. Sixo is one of the nine slaves living on Sweet Home, a Kentucky plantation.à A young man in his twenties, Morrison introduces him as ââ¬Å"the wild manâ⬠(11) without explanation.à Later, Paul D describes Sixo as ââ¬Å"Indigo with a flame-red tongueâ⬠(21).à He is closer to the African experience then the other slaves.à Morrison portrays Sixo as the odd man out in an attempt at underlining the idea of an individual in a community.à Community at Sweet Home is the only reassuring object possessed by the slaves.à The relationship among fellow slaves creates a ââ¬Å"mockâ⬠community, which is enough to satisfy everyone.à Morrison utilizes Sixo as rebellious and clever, one who refuses to conform to his predicament.à Physically a slave, Sixo rejects his position and remains a spirited man who takes night walks and dances among the trees to keep his bloodlines open.à Although black sexuality is dominated by slavery, he chooses his own woman and controls his own destiny.à Sixo ââ¬Å"plotted down to the minute a thirty-mile trip to see a woman.â⬠(21) Despite the bounds of slavery, Sixo asserts his independence and searched for a better life and family of his own.à In an attempt to free himself from the restrai... ...Sixoââ¬â¢s characterization defines how slaves managed to remain people despite slavery.à Morrison places Sixo in the novel Beloved, to express the manifestation of community as well as individualism.à Sixo uses the strengths of the Sweet Home community to independently search for an identity of his own.à Without the consistent community of Sweet Home, Sixo could not of ventured upon journey after journey in search of personal freedom. The steady community enabled Sixo to express a rebellious independence, that otherwise would have been lost.à Sixo maintained a sense of self, lost by many others.à Beloved explains that the independent spirit and the belief in personal self worth can not be maintained without the presence of an impermeable community, and the individual desire for freedom. Labor and Delivery Assessment Essay
Internal fetal monitoring is accomplished with a fetal scalp electrode that is a direct electrocardiogram of the FHR and therefore produces the most accurate FHR tracing having an advantage over the external monitoring. The FSE is attached to the fetus during a vaginal exam and then connected to a fetal monitor. Because the risk of transmission to the fetus is increased by the small puncture in the fetal scalp, use of internal scalp electrodes should be avoided if at all possible in the presence of known maternal infections such as HIV, hepatitis or GBS. Fetal scalp monitors are also avoided in preterm infants because of the increased risk of ventricular hemorrhage. Electronic monitoring of UCs can be done internally by using an intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC). It is inserted into the uterine cavity through the cervical os. It reflects the pressure inside the uterine cavity. As the pressure changes, it traces on the graph paper. The IUPC can measure the resting tone of the uterus between contractions, referred to as intensity. An advantage of an IUPC is that it provides a near-exact pressure measurement for contraction intensity and uterine resting tone. The sensitivity of the IUPC allows for very accurate timing of UCs, thus making it extremely useful when closer uterine monitoring is needed. A disadvantage for both internal monitoring methods is that membranes must be ruptured and adequate cervical dilation must be achieved for insertion. The procedure is invasive and increases the risk of uterine infection or perforation or trauma. It can also cause a placenta rupture if the placenta is low-lying. Electronic FHR monitoring can be done externally by using an ultrasound (US) transducer. The transducer is placed on the maternal abdomen over the fetal back and held by an elastic belt. The US transducer can be more beneficial than auscultating the FHR because it provides a continuous graphic recording. It can show the baseline variability and changes in the FHR. It is noninvasive and doesnââ¬â¢t require the rupture of membranes or minimal cervical dilation. FHR monitoring by US transducer is limited because it is susceptible to interference from maternal or fetal movement and may produce a weak signal. The tracing may become sketchy and difficult to interpret. Telemetry is another type external monitoring. It can monitor both FHR and uterine activity. This system can be worn on a shoulder strap by the mother, which allows the woman to ambulate, helping her ambulate while continuously monitoring. Electric monitoring of UCs can be done externally using a tocodynamometer or tocotransducer (toco). The toco is placed on the maternal abdomen at or near the fundus and held in place by an elastic belt. As the uterus contracts, pressure exerted against the toco is transmitted and recorded on to graph paper. The toco can assess UCs for frequency and duration, but not intensity. The advantages are that it is non-invasive, easy to place, and may be used both before and following rupture of membranes. It also provides a permanent, continuous recording of the duration and frequency of contractions. Explain what Pitocin is used for: Pitocin is used for the induction and/or augmentation of labor at term, facilitation of threatened abortion, and in postpartum to control bleeding and prevent hemorrhage and uterine atony after expulsion of the placenta. PELVIC ASSESSMENT FINDINGS:Give normal findings and measurements Diagonal conjugate ââ¬â extends from the suprapubic angle to the middle of the sacral promontory. ââ¬â 12.5 cm Ischial Spines ââ¬â arise near the junction of the ileum and ischium and jut into the pelvic cavity They serve as a reference point during labor to elevate the descent of the fetal head into the birth canal. 10.5 cm Pubic Arch ââ¬â triangular space below the symphysis pubis. The head passes under this arch during birth. 1.5 ââ¬â 2 c from diagonal conjugal Coccyx -small triangular bone that articulates with the sacrum. It usually moves backward during labor to provide more room for the fetus. > 8cm in diameter Sacrum ââ¬â wedge-shaped bone formed by the fusion of five vertebrae. On the anterior upper portion of the sacrum is the sacral promontory which is another guide in determining pelvic measurements. Types of Pelvis Gynecoid -The most common female pelvis is the gynecoid type. The inlet is rounded, with the anteroposterior diameter a little shorter than the transverse diameter. This is the most favorable for a vaginal delivery. Android ââ¬â The normal male pelvis is the android type; however, it occasionally is seen in females. The inlet is heart-shaped. Anthropoid ââ¬â The inlet of an anthropoid pelvis is oval, with a long anteroposterior diameter and an adequate but rather short transverse diameter. This is the second most favorable for vaginal delivery.
Bite Me: A Love Story Chapter 8
8. Being the Chronicles of Abby Normal, in the Double-doomed Doghouse of Despair Do the condemned in hell know the suffering that is a whole day of mom-guilt heaped like steaming piles of bat guano upon my spiky magenta coif? (I went with magenta spikes with electric violet tips to express my outrage at being dragged from my home and imprisoned with the cruel Mombot and my crapacious little sister, Ronnie.) Evidently, Mother feels that we were too young to move in together only a week after meeting, and live in a stolen apartment with two of the undead and their stupid amounts of cash. Although she doesn't really know about the undead or the cash parts, but she made her point. ââ¬ËKayso, I had like put on my red tartan wedding gown with the black veil and resolved myself to an all-day power-pout in the corner of the living room, coming up only to text Foo messages of my agony of missing him and change the channel and whatnot, when Jared called from the land-line at the love lair. So I'm all, ââ¬Å"Speak, corpse-fluffer.â⬠And Jared is all, ââ¬Å"OMFG! The Countess is out, and she was naked, but now she's not, and she totally got blood all over your leather corset, and you have to come right now because the rats are freaking out and we need a hacksaw and a file.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Uh-oh.â⬠And Jared is all, ââ¬Å"I know. I know. OMG! OMG!â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Is she pissed?â⬠Sounding way more chill than I felt. And Jared pauses for a second like he's thinking it over, then he's all, ââ¬Å"She's wearing your clothes and there's blood running all down the front of her and she's nodding and showing her fangs and shit.â⬠So I'm like getting some perspective now-like when you're a kid and you think it sucks that you have to eat hydrogenated peanut butter on your PBJ, and then you see one of those starving commercial kids with the flies in their eyes, who don't even have a sandwich-and you're all, ââ¬Å"Well, that sucks.â⬠ââ¬ËKayso, I'm thinking that maybe being under restriction in the mother unit's Fillmore stronghold isn't so bad when compared to having the Countess busting out her wrath on you for imprisoning her in bronze. So I'm like, ââ¬Å"Sucks to be you, Jared. Byez.â⬠And I offed my phone. So like five minutes go by, which I spend in my corner going, ââ¬Å"Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit,â⬠and whatnot, and the land-line rings. And Ronnie is all, ââ¬Å"Are you going to get that?â⬠from her room. And I'm all, ââ¬Å"I didn't even know it was hooked up.â⬠And she was all, ââ¬Å"It's probably Mom checking up on you, so you might as well get it.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Ronnie, answer it or I will murder you in your sleep and dump your body in the Bay.â⬠And she's all, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËKay.â⬠Then, ââ¬Å"It's for you. It's some girl named Jody.â⬠And Ronnie is all standing there with her shaved head and her nonexistent hip thrown out, like ââ¬Å"So there, ho.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Fucksocks!â⬠And I take the phone and I'm like, ââ¬Å"Hi, I have amnesia and don't remember anything for the last two months!â⬠Because what do you say to someone who you had bronzed? And the Countess is all, ââ¬Å"Abby, I'm not angry.â⬠Which was a total lie, because I could hear that she was angry. She had that ââ¬Å"I'm not angryâ⬠mom voice, even though she's only, like, twenty-six in real years. ââ¬Å"So you're not going to kill me?â⬠ââ¬Å"We'll talk. Right now I need you to get a power drill and a hacksaw with extra blades and come to the loft.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"I don't know where to get stuff like that, and Foo's at work, and I'm on restriction, and I have to go to school tomorrow. I have a test, so I totally can't cut class, and besides, what do you need that stuff for?â⬠And she's all, ââ¬Å"Find the tools and come now. Tommy is stuck in the statue and we need to get him out.â⬠And I'm thinking, Oops. But I'm chill and I'm like, ââ¬Å"Can't he get out the same way you did?â⬠And the Countess is all, ââ¬Å"Tommy doesn't know how to turn to mist. That's how I escaped, but Tommy has been trapped in there for-how long, Abby?â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, like a couple of days. It's all so foggy, after the head trauma.â⬠Then I hear her saying, like, ââ¬Å"Jared, come over here. I want Abby to hear your neck snap.â⬠ââ¬Å"Okay, like five weeks. Fuck, Countess, overreact much?â⬠ââ¬Å"Come now, Abby.â⬠And she just clicks off. So I text Foo: COUNTESS OUT, NEED HACKSAW PWRDRILL NOW And he's all: WTF? WTF? WTF? OUT? WTF? ACE HARDWARE, CASTRO ST (I know. Four WTFs! Foo has deep intellectual curiosity. Last week he quizzed me for twenty minutes on what it was like to have a clitoris. I just kept saying ââ¬Å"nice.â⬠I know, I'm such a tard, I couldn't think of anything else. I so have to learn French. They have like thirty-seven words for clitoris. They're like snow to Eskimos, only you know, harder to build an igloo out of.) ââ¬ËKayso, I text him: KTXBYE â⬠¹3 And I tell Ronnie to tell Mom that I think I got some anthrax on my toothbrush and I have to go to Walgreens to get a new one so I'll be right back. Then I put on my jacket with the sun warts, in case of vampyre kitties and whatnot, and I take the F car up to Castro Street and go to Ace Hardware. And I'm totally feeling the animosity coming off the Builder Bob guy in the red apron, and I'm like, ââ¬Å"What? You've never seen a wedding dress?â⬠And he's all, ââ¬Å"No, I love the dress, the jacket, the whole ensem is fabulous.â⬠And I'm like, ââ¬Å"Really? Thanks. Your apron rocks. I need a hacksaw and a power drill.â⬠And he's all, ââ¬Å"What's it for?â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"You want a note from my mom? A fucking hacksaw and a power drill. I'm on a schedule.â⬠And he's all, ââ¬Å"I asked because we have over thirty different kinds of power drills.â⬠And I'm like, ââ¬Å"Oh. I need to release my Dark Lord from the bronze shell in which I imprisoned him.â⬠And he's, ââ¬Å"Oh, you should have said so.â⬠And he leads me to the drill boutique and I picked out a red and black one that matched my dress, and Bob picked out a hacksaw which totally clashed, but I didn't want to hurt his feelings, so I said it was trs beau, which is French for sweet. ââ¬ËKayso, as I'm paying for my stuff, I go, ââ¬Å"So, why are you guys still open at midnight?â⬠And Bob goes, ââ¬Å"Well, you know how it is, you never know when someone is going to need to free their dark lord in the middle of the night, or tie him up.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Ewww.â⬠Because I do not go for that shit. I am only into S and bondage as it applies to wardrobe. I tried cutting myself to express my heartbreak over Tommy (Lord Flood) rejecting me, but OMFG it hurts like flaming fuck. I mean, I'm into self-mutilations as much as the next person-I have eight piercings and five tattoos, some that hurt like double flaming fuck to get, but that was professional, and you can blame someone. In fact, I know a guy in the Haight who will tattoo you for free if you're a girl and you keep yelling at him the whole time, which, it turns out, isn't that hard to do when someone is poking you with an electric needle. When he did my bat wings I screamed at him so much I lost my voice for two days. ââ¬ËKayso, I took the F car across town and the three blocks from Market to the loft, but like holding the button on my sun wart jacket in case I got ambushed by Chet and his vampyre kitty pals, because I totally can't run in my wedding dress because the buckles of my motocross platforms get caught in the lace, so it's like, stand and fight or die, bitches! But no vamp kitties came. Anyway, I make it to the loft and I come in all, ââ¬Å"Hey Countess, here's your drill!â⬠All Carebear-on-crack-perky, although that might have been a mistake, because it's a proven fact that it's easier to murder the perky. And I'm sort of, WTF vampyress? Because she's not her normal self, which is like hemophiliac hawt, but she's like printer-paper pale. And I totally ignore the fact that she's wearing one of my long skirts and my black bustier without even asking, and it's bustiering her way more than it does me, which is kind of rude. And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Countess, are you okay? You look kind of pale.â⬠And Jared is all, ââ¬Å"You should have seen her before she drank those blood bags.â⬠And I'm suddenly feeling all poop on a stick, because it's obvious that she's all gone snowflake because she's been locked up without feeding. So I'm like, ââ¬Å"Sorry. I just wanted you guys to be together for eternity, and it didn't sound like that's how it was going to happen.â⬠And she's like, ââ¬Å"Later, Abby.â⬠And she just takes the tools from me and goes over to the statue and starts drilling and sawing and whatnot. So I'm like, ââ¬Å"How did you get out?â⬠And she's all, ââ¬Å"Rat boy was dancing and nicked the casting with his dagger.â⬠And Jared's all, ââ¬Å"I wasn't dancing. I had some espresso and I was telling them my novel and I lost my balance on your stupid boots.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"You can't give him caffeine, Countess. His aunt gave him a hundred-dollar Starbucks card for Christmas and we had to have an intervention.â⬠And Jody pauses and looks back at me, her eyes looking all emerald-like, because except for her hair, she has no color in her face and she's like, ââ¬Å"Tommy didn't know how to turn to mist, Abby. I never had a chance to teach him before you bronzed us. He's been trapped in here, fully conscious, for five weeks.â⬠And I'm like backing away, because I've seen the Countess pissed off before, like when the Animals kidnapped Tommy and she had to kick their asses to get him back, but now she's all jaw tightened like she's keeping herself from tearing my arms off or something. So I sort of feel for the button on the cuff of my sun jacket. Not like I was going to fry the Countess, because I wouldn't do that, but just for security. And she just snaps her hand out and before I can move she's pulled the battery out of my inside pocket and ripped off the wire leads. I mean like faster than you can blink. So I'm like, ââ¬Å"I wasn't going to light it up.â⬠And she's all, ââ¬Å"Just to be safe.â⬠But I'm not feeling safe. And I can tell that Jared isn't feeling safe because he's sort of sniffling like he's going to start crying. And Jody is sawing on the bronze like a crazy person-on the side where she used to be, so she doesn't cut Tommy-and finally she has, like, enough sawed away that she can pull a piece away and look in. And she's all, ââ¬Å"Tommy, we're going to get you out of there. I have to be careful, but I'll get you out of there soon.â⬠And Jared is like, ââ¬Å"Do you need a flashlight?â⬠And Jody is like, ââ¬Å"No, I can see.â⬠And Jared is all, ââ¬Å"Is he dead?â⬠And right then Jody snaps a hacksaw blade and goes, ââ¬Å"Well of course he's dead, he's a vampyre.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Duh? Tard.â⬠As I hand Jody another blade. I have to say, that for someone with super powers and immortality, the Countess kind of sucks ass with tools. I guess the dark gift doesn't include home improvement skills. ââ¬ËKayso, after about an hour the Countess pulls a big piece off the statue, revealing Tommy's face and torso and whatnot, and he's just stuck there, not moving, not opening his eyes, and even whiter than the Countess, kind of a light bruise-blue color. And Jared is all, ââ¬Å"He dead?â⬠And Jody is like kind of between a scream and a sob, and she's like, ââ¬Å"Get me another blood bag, Jared. And Abby, where the fuck are my clothes?â⬠And a little blood tear runs down her cheek. And I'm like, ââ¬Å"Uh-oh.â⬠Because now I realize why she's wearing my clothes. When Foo and I moved in we put all of Tommy and Jody's clothes in vacuum bags under the bed. So I'm like, ââ¬Å"What do you want to wear, Countess? I'll get it. I mean, you can wear my stuff any time you want, because I am your faithful minion, but you have been endowed by your creator with significantly more boobage and junk in the trunk than me, no offense, and my stuff doesn't exactly fit you. No offense.â⬠And Jared is all, ââ¬Å"She had your Emily hoody on over that but it got blood all over it.â⬠Not helping at all. ââ¬Å"Hey, who wants a latte?â⬠And the Countess snarled at Jared, full frontal fangs and all. And Jared jumped back and turned his ankle. And I'm like, ââ¬Å"Oh shit!â⬠And she barks, ââ¬Å"Blood!â⬠And Jared and I are all, ââ¬Å"Coming right up. Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit.â⬠And I bring her the bag of blood and she tears it open with her teeth and just pours it over his lips and in his mouth and nothing happens. And Jody is crying and getting louder and Jared and I are getting more and more freaked out and even all the rats in their little boxes are freaking out and running around in circles and whatnot. And finally Tommy's eyes pop open, and they're like crystal blue, like ice, not like eyes, and he screams, and I swear to fucking zombie Jebus, the whole wall of windows in the loft just shattered in the frames. So Jared and I are all bent over in the corner, covering our ears, and Tommy comes flying out of the statue. You can hear his leg bones cracking like pretzels as he pulls them out, but he scurries on his hands, knocking rats and furniture every which way, coming right at me, fangs first. And I go to reach for the button on my sleeve, but he's on me, biting my neck. He's so strong it's like trying to fight a statue, and I can hear Jody screaming, and the skin on my neck tearing in shreds. And my vision is like tunneling down to dark, and I'm thinking, I'm fucking dying? What the fuck's up with that? Then there's this loud clang, like a bell, and I feel Tommy pulled off me. And light sort of comes back on. I can see the Countess standing there, holding Foo's stainless-steel floor lamp like it's a lance, and she's obviously just smacked Tommy with it hard enough to knock him off of me. But instead of going at her, he comes scurrying right back at me, smearing blood all over the floor and everything. And the Countess catches him by the neck from behind and swings him around and out through the broken windows, and the metal frames and everything go with him. So there's the scream again, and I'm holding my neck, and I sort of crawl to the big hole that used to be the front wall of the loft, and Tommy is in the middle of the street below, naked, in a big splash of metal and glass, and he's like crawling up the side of a car to his feet. And Jody's beside me. And she's all, ââ¬Å"Tommy! Tommy!â⬠But he's limping off down the alley across the street, walking like his legs are still broken, but maybe healing or something as he goes, but hurting like holy-fuck. So Jody takes my head and turns it to the side and pulls my hand away from the bite. And I feel like I'm going to pass out. But she bends down and licks my neck, like three times, then puts my hand back on the wound. ââ¬Å"Hold that. It'll heal in a second.â⬠Then she shook me and was all, ââ¬Å"Now, where the fuck are my clothes?â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"Under the bed. Vacuum bags.â⬠I think I passed out then, because next thing I remember, the Countess is standing there in jeans and boots and her red leather jacket, and she's stuffing bags of blood into my biohazard messenger bag. And she's all, ââ¬Å"I'm taking this.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"ââ¬ËKay.â⬠Then I'm like, ââ¬Å"You saved me.â⬠ââ¬Å"I'm taking half the money, too,â⬠she said. I'm all, ââ¬Å"You can't go. Where will you go? Who will take care of you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Like you did?â⬠she says. ââ¬Å"I'm so sorry,â⬠I said. And she's all, ââ¬Å"I know. I have to find him. I brought him into this. He never wanted any of this. He just wanted someone to love him.â⬠So she starts to leave, without even saying good-bye, and I'm all, ââ¬Å"Countess, wait, there's vampyre cats.â⬠And she stops. And she turns all, ââ¬Å"Whaaaa?â⬠And Jared is all nodding and going, ââ¬Å"Really. Really.â⬠And I'm, ââ¬Å"Chet turned a bunch of kitties into vampyre kitties. They attacked the Emperor last night and they ate a meter maid.â⬠And she was all, ââ¬Å"Oh, for fuck's sake.â⬠And I'm all, ââ¬Å"I know, I know.â⬠Then she was gone. And Jared was like in the middle of catching some escaped rats and he's all, ââ¬Å"You guys are going to totally lose your security deposit.â⬠Jody is just gone. Gone. On her own in the night. It's like Lord Byron said in that poem ââ¬Å"Darkness.â⬠Darkness had no need Of aid from them- She was the Universe. I'd like to go bone my sister now. I'm paraphrasing.

Abortion: Should Abortion Be Legal?
Abortion: Should Abortion Be Legal? Throughout the history people have agreed and disagreed with many significant issues. And in the face of controversial arguments everyone has their very own opinion. Even though it is more likely that reasonable people might agree with a logical argument, there are some that are not very easy to convince because it contradicts their view points. Such is the case of the controversial issue of abortion. To understand better why people support abortion, first we have to comprehend what abortion is.According to the National Right to Life, the term abortion refers to ââ¬Å"any premature expulsion of a human fetus, whether naturally spontaneous, as in a miscarriage, or artificially induced, as in a surgical or chemical abortion. â⬠(www. nrlc. org, March 4, 2013). The definition is only useful to appreciate the real problem more precisely. In this paper I will focus on four key arguments that support pro-abortion; and I will present my opinion on e ach one to evaluate if the argument works or not through the usage of rhetorical thinking. Finally, I will conclude by briefly stating my opinion regarding this issue after analyzing these arguments of the other side of the coin. One of the most talked about arguments that support abortion is ââ¬Å"Abortion is a Fundamental Right. â⬠In Jan. 22, 1973 the US Supreme Court recognized ââ¬Å"A woman's right to choose abortion is a ââ¬Ëfundamental rightââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ in the case Roe v. Wade. Lower federal courts had declaredâ⬠¦ denying a woman the right to decide whether to carry a pregnancy to term violated basic privacy and liberty interests contained in the Constitution. The court concluded that Constitutional rights to privacy and liberty protected a woman's right to terminate her pregnancy. â⬠(NAF. org, 5 March 2013). This is a strong argument because it is about abortion in the terms of its legal premises. The Supreme Court had to give the woman the reason because that is what is written in the Constitution. Besides, it is much easier to let a person win a case than changing the Constitution. Even though the arguments presented in court defended the woman very assuredly. The final decision did not even mention any rights of the potential life that was forming or whatsoever, which is wrong because the woman can do anything that she wants with her body, but the fetus that I inside her is a totally distinct individual with different DNA and factions. For these reasons, this argument is a dilemma because while abortion gives the woman the right to make decisions on her body, it eliminates the legal rights of the unborn child. Another slightly more sensible pro-abortion argument is ââ¬Å"Abortion in the Case of Pregnancy Due to Rape. According to the website Libertarians for Life, ââ¬Å"Pregnancy due to rape acts against the woman's liberty. In some sense, it's a perpetuation of the aggression of the rapist. Regardless of the practical problems of pregnancy, rape is a major trauma, and the pregnancy complicates that still further. â⬠(Walter, 10 March 2013). This argument has a sense of pathos, in the way that it conveys a tragic experience with an undesired pregnancy. The author highlights how keeping the pregnancy could lead to a major psychological trauma.A different but as well as sensible pro-abortion topic is the issue of ââ¬Å"Abortion gives couples the option to choose not to birth babies with severe and life-threatening medical conditions. â⬠According to PROCON. org, ââ¬Å"The X syndrome, the most common genetic form of mental retardation, affects about 1 in 4,000 males and 1 in 8,000 females. One in 800 babies have Down Syndrome, and one in 3,500 babies are born with Cystic Fibrosis. It is not right to sentence a child to life with an acute handicap. â⬠(PROCON. org, 5 March 2013) This argument conveys a lot of sense of pathos. It is effective because the only people that can actually understand this deeply are the parents and family involved. However, I still strongly disagree with taking away an innocent humanââ¬â¢s life. Besides, with so many technological advantages, it is sad to see that people donââ¬â¢t test themselves before deciding to have a baby and later find, during the pregnancy, that the baby thatââ¬â¢s coming will have a mental or physical disadvantage. In addition, there is no proof that showing that Down Syndrome people feel ââ¬Ësentencedââ¬â¢ or in any disadvantage. It is just the parents that see that the baby is different, not the baby himself. Therefore, this should also be considered a hasty generalization because the family and others see that the baby will be born with a disadvantage, they think that the baby will be miserableââ¬âbut thereââ¬â¢s no proof of that. Mary Gordon, a pro-choice woman author of A Moral Choice, gives her opinion and brings up a very important issue in favor of abortion: ââ¬Å"Abortion transformed from a public into a private issue. She stated that ââ¬Å"The RU-486 pill, which can induce abortion early on, exists. â⬠She added that women were going to obtain it whether or not it is ââ¬Å"legally available. â⬠Her claim is that ââ¬Å"If abortion can occur through chemical rather than physical means, in the privacy of oneââ¬â¢s home, most people not directly involved will lose interest in it. As abortion is transformed from a public into a private issue, it will cease to be perceived as political; it will be called personal instead. â⬠(Gordon 190).I think Gordon is right at some pointââ¬âwhen she softens out the issue that by making a medical rather than a physical abortion it would then become more personal rather than political, some people might even change their view point, just like they did with the morning-after pill. However, I still believe that if there is already a morning-after pill, then there should be no reason for any woman to wait until conf irming her pregnancy in order to take action. Why not taking the morning-after-pill after an unprotected intercourse to avoid any problem on the first place?Time is very crucial in all aspects; women that wait to see if they are pregnant take a very high risk that can lead to either an unwanted pregnancy or worseââ¬âan abortion. On the other hand, I think she is trying to cover the sun with one finger. She is exposing a slippery slope fallacy by sort of saying that if people donââ¬â¢t see the problem, then there should be no problem at all, which isnââ¬â¢t true because not by covering the problem, it will make it disappear. Who knows maybe by doing abortions at home there could be more risks involved. In conclusion, I believe that Abortion is a cruel, immature and unfair way to end a pregnancy. No one should end a pregnancy because it is their responsibility to use contraceptives on the first place. If a woman cannot afford to buy contraceptives, then she should control her instincts instead of getting pregnant to get rid of the unborn baby afterwards. Besides, medicine is so advanced nowadays which really makes abortion a despicable choice for an apathetic woman.Even though, I do respect their opinions regarding their ââ¬Å"freedomâ⬠, I do not think that they have much of consideration for the lives of their unborn babies. The reasons why a woman could end her pregnancy are endless. There are tons of excusesââ¬âsome good others not muchââ¬âthat will always come into sight, but if we start taking wise choices from the beginning, then, we will be able to determine that who pays the consequences is not the person that made the damage but the innocent baby that the mom-to-be does not want to give the right to live. Moreover, if abortion was made illegal again, then hundreds of lives would be saved every year. Besides, life is the most valuable gift anyone can have and possibly give. But like the saying goes: to each their own. Since abortion is legal, it is really up to the woman to take a wise and moral decision and to opt for different alternatives before abortion.
